First Nations Sites

  • Native Web: Resources for Indigenous cultures around the world:  An award-winning portal with many useful links.  Information from and about indigenous peoples (global).  Uses primary sources.  Try looking at Resources by Geography.
     

  • Arctic CircleAn "electronic circle" has three interrelated themes: natural resources, history and culture, social equity and environmental justice.  Focuses on current issues.
     

  • North American Indian Resources: Main Menu:  Portal and information site for links to resources for and about native peoples.  Important link to the WWW Virtual Library and links to aboriginal stories, art, accounts, maps etc.
     

  • The Atlas of Canada: Cutting-edge stuff in geographic applications of the internet.  There are hundreds of links to just about everything to do with geography, especially aboriginal geographies (maps, treaties, links, histories, statistics).  Includes blank maps.
     

  • First Peoples on Schoolnet: For anthropological, ethnographic, historical and cultural research as well as general interest in Canadian museum collections.  Very broad and concise; uses historical or present-day visuals.
     

  • Civilizations. ca: Canadian Museum of Civilization houses more than 3.75 million artifacts spanning history, archaeology, culture, ethnology and various other studies
     

  • GoodMinds.com: Online catalogue of Educational Resources for Native American and First Nations Studies.  Native owned and operated.
     

  • 100 Mile and Area Community Website: Simple.  The FN voice is evident.
     

  • BC Provincial Archives Time Machine: First Nations BC: Developed to provide accessibility to BC's historical documents, images and other multimedia information in a format designed for school age children. Includes pre-contact history and culture, contact information, confederation, moving images and teaching ideas.
     

  • Assembly of First Nations: The site advances the mandate of the AFN which includes employment, equity, education, justice, development and land claims.
     

  • First Nations Information Project: Connects aboriginal communities and those interested in sharing the aboriginal experience.
     

  • Links to Aboriginal Resources: For teachers there is a 21-page summary of aboriginal law in Canada and an annotated Indian Act and resource links.
     

  • Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage: Aboriginal Peoples: A wide range of information and analysis of the history, geography, population, culture and society of the Newfoundland area. This site includes prehistory, contact with Europeans, relationship to natural environment, and present day issues.
     

  • First Nations History Theme Page: Contains histories of about 240 FN groups, some from Eastern Canada.  Each history has information in the following categories: location, population, names, language, sub-nations, villages and bands, current groups, culture and history.
     

  • The Nisga'a People Welcome You: Provides a profile for the Nisga'a people, their history, culture, issues and challenges the myths about land claims.  Suited for student research and a good site for teaching 'viewpoint.'  There are profiles of communities before, during and after the period of contact with the Europeans.
     

  • The AFN Youth Digitization Website Project: Provides insights into the political arm of the First Nations and instils pride in young aboriginals; includes a strong evaluation of the education system. 
     

  • Virtual Museum Canada:  Offers extensive coverage of a broad range of First Nations topics for secondary students.  Many awards for this Government of Canada site created to engage Canadians in the stories and treasures that define our diverse heritages.  Use the Search tool to look for informative sites.
     

  • North American Indian Resources:  Maps, art, books, games, and valuable links galore.  A fun site with some links more current than others and some links not active.  The site is maintained in honour of the creator; it is awkward to navigate in places but worthwhile.
     

  • BC Treaty Commission:  This site provides links to many different First Nations web sites from around BC.  These sites are produced by the different communities represented,  providing a variety of First Nations perspectives.
     

  • University of Washington Libraries Digital Collections:  This site provides an extensive digital collection of original photographs and documents about the Northwest Coast and Plateau Indian cultures, complemented by essays written by anthropologists, historians, and teachers about both particular tribes and cross-cultural topics.
